The post for my next letter… F, has ended up totally
NOT being what I had planned to use this letter for.
My original “idea” was FALL & the reasons I love it
so much, but then I ran across a few things the other
day while in my “cleaning frenzy”, and I decided I’d
go with FOOTBALL instead. (yesss… just so I could
share this!) But then I realized that it all kind of goes
hand in hand, so now I’m just gonna share BOTH! :)
First things first…
If I have ever told you that me and Pat Dye were
“buddies” and you didn’t believe me, after reading this
post, you will!! I have ALWAYS been an Auburn fan, but
when I was younger… I lived it, breathed it, LOVED it!! Everything about it. There were (many!) times that I
sweet talked my “Pop” into driving me to Auburn just
so we could go to the bookstore (J & M usually)! There
is just something in the air in Auburn that can not be
described. It’s just a feeling. And I’ve always had that “feeling” when I go to Auburn, even if it’s not for a game. It’s in my veins. And it’s in the chills you get when you
watch the eagle soar for the first time… or for the
hundredth time! I think I’ve known the fight song since I
was able to talk. When I went to games, I got decked
out! Not because anybody made me… because I wanted
to, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way!!! (as you
will see from the pic below, lol)
Not only did I love Auburn... but I really loooved Pat Dye. When I went to Fan Day, he was the one I wanted to
see. When I went to a game, I watched him with
binoculars. He was just #1 in my eyes! So, I guess when
I was about 10 or so, I decided that I was going to
write him a letter. I’m not even sure how I got an
address, but I think I found one for the Athletics
Department in a game day program. And that was
that… signed, sealed and delivered! You can’t even
imagine how excited I was a couple of weeks later
when I received this in the mail:
It was a moment for sure! Over the course of about a
year I guess, we communicated frequently. Every time I would write him, he always either wrote back or sent me
something. He would send me game programs, lots of posters, Auburn trading cards (even Bo Jackson’s), all
kinds of things. Even a birthday card:
You know, things are so different now than they were
in 1989. I wonder if stuff like this even
happens anymore. I know that I appreciate him taking
the time to acknowledge me back then, because it was
a BIG deal for one little girl! It is something that I am
proud of and that I treasure. It’s amazing how
something that’s so small to one can mean so
much to someone else. War Damn Eagle!
